Ann Lovejoy - Gardening, Food Writing
Rare is the Pacific Northwest gardener who is not familiar with Ann Lovejoy, one of America's best-known and widely respected gardening gurus. Author of more than 18 books, she has been called the Mother Theresa of organic gardening and in 1996 was awarded the American Horticultural Society’s Horticultural Writing Award for excellence in writing and significant contribution to horticulture. In 2011 Lovejoy was also named a Bainbridge Island Treasure. Her recent works include Ann Lovejoy's Organic Garden Design School (2001), A Year Along the Garden Path (2002), Fragrance in Bloom (2004), Fresh from the Garden Cookbook (2005), and The Ann Lovejoy Handbook of Northwest Gardening: Natural-Sustainable-Organic (2007). Through her books and newspaper columns Ann Lovejoy has inspired not only countless gardeners but also a cadre of community volunteers. Her public volunteer gardening project (The Town in Bloom) which turns neglected public spaces into thriving gardens, has recently won a national award. Ann Lovejoy and her Friday Tidy's group of volunteers also keep the Bainbridge Public Library garden looking beautiful year round.
