Don't miss the many events such as "Read to a Dog", "Kuteeyaa Dancers", "Roberto the Magnificent" and others. You can find details on the event calendar and also in the description of major events. 2009 Summer Reading Program Carmine Rau, Children's Librarian, informs that more 1400 Bainbridge Island children signed up in this year's Summer Reading Program. The Summer Reading Program is an annual summer favorite for children and a great incentive to foster a love of reading at an early age. The program is county-wide in the Kitsap Regional Library system. For the Friends of the Library groups in each library, it is usually the top supported library program. Other sponsors include the KRL Foundation, Kitsap County, the S'Klallam Tribe, Kitsap Rotary Clubs, and the Kitsap Sun.
As Carmine said so well, "all of the young readers are winners." One however stood out as the Top Summer Reader of 2009: fifth-grader Edward Martens. He read more than 350 hours and here are his top 10 recommended books and series:

Read to a DogTwice a year for the past five years, children have had the opportunity to read to dog at the Bainbridge Public Library. According to Carmine Rau, this is one of the fun programs to encourage young readers. The most recent was this past week in June where everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. The Bainbridge Review's Connie Mears recently ran a story about the program, the dogs, and island children. You can read the full article here. More photos of the event this June by Connie Mears are shown below. ![]() ![]() |
