James K. Wellman - Comparative Religion
An associate professor of American Religion and chair of the Comparative Religion Program at the University of Washington, Wellman has written and contributed to several books that reach beyond an academic audience. He is co-editor of
The Power of Religious Publics: Staking Claims in American Society (1999); author of The Gold Coast Church and the Ghetto: Christ and Culture in Mainline Protestantism (1999); contributor to
Religion and Public Life in the Pacific Northwest: The None Zone (2004), and editor of
Belief and Bloodshed: Religion and Violence across Time and Tradition (2007). Wellman's most recent book is
Evangelical vs. Liberal (2008). In it he analyzes the cultural conflict that has come to divide American society - a conflict that also plays itself out in Protestant faith communities. Wellman discusses the nature of the conflict and provides insights that go beyond easy labels such as "liberal" and "evangelical". For more information on this author go to
